Remember, remember, the Fifth of November, The Gunpowder Treason and Plot... I know of no reason why the Gunpowder Treason should ever be forgot...

We watched V for Vendetta last night. I must say I found it extremely interesting, although there were certainly parts I disliked. It's rather confusing at times, and I feel like if I watched it again I might understand it better... but overall, I think I liked it. It's an interesting storyline, and the acting is quite good. Needless to say, I was considerably astonished with the latter--Natalie Portman with an English accent??

I am beginning to think that, perhaps, that girl really can act. She really did a quite amazing job in V, although her accent was, at times, quite cheesy. Hugo Weaving was awesome as V, but then, we already knew he's awesome. The fact that you never see his face throughout the entire film was a nice added touch.

As to the storyline... A man attempts to overthrough a totalitarian government. Pretty simple, right? No, not really... not when you have as many sub-plots running through the main plot as the Wachowski brothers put in this film. It kept me guessing until the very end, and there were several twists and turns that I most definitely didn't see coming.

There were certainly things that I didn't agree with, but really, I thought it was an interesting, well-done, well-acted film. I wouldn't mind seeing it again, although not too soon... It's not one that I'd watch over and over again, I don't think. Still, I enjoyed it. Probably a 8/10, although that rating might change once I've thought over it for a little while longer/seen it again.

Remember, remember, the Fifth of November, the Gunpowder Treason and Plot... I know of no reason why the Gunpowder Treason should ever be forgot... But what of the man? I know his name was Guy Fawkes and I know, in 1605, he attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament. But who was he really? What was he like? We are told to remember the idea, not the man, because a man can fail. He can be caught, he can be killed and forgotten, but 400 years later, an idea can still change the world. I've witnessed first hand the power of ideas, I've seen people kill in the name of them, and die defending them... but you cannot kiss an idea, cannot touch it, or hold it... ideas do not bleed, they do not feel pain, they do not love... And it is not an idea that I miss, it is a man... A man that made me remember the Fifth of November. A man that I will never forget.

Note: Too bad tomorrow's Sunday, or I would wait to post this until the 5th... That would be fun. Oh well... The 4th will have to do.

  • AHA!!! Dueling reviews!!!

Also a very well-written review. I really liked this movie as well, though I agree there were some aspects I wished they would have left out. As usual, the Wachowskis succeeded in creating a movie that caused their audience to think. I think they're wrong in many areas, of course, but it was definitely a good movie.

I'm with you in that it's not a movie I want to watch over and over again. Especially the parts where Evey was captured, etc. I don't want to spoil it for anyone else, but that part was a little trying emotionally. I don't know why, but I began wondering how I would fare in such a situation. This empathy really drained me, and the scene after in the rain seemed really profound, too. However, I'm ready to watch it again...I'll have to see if Gabe has it. :)

I didn't even think about the date. That is hilarious. You need to set up something that will post blogs automatically, so that it would post on the 5th of November without any action on anyone's part. Would you be causing your computer to sin on the Sabbath, then? hmmmm... lol. Thank you for posting this. An excellent read, as usual. I expect it from you girls. ;) I'm spoiled now.

  • Indeed! I posted (and wrote) mine first, though! Bwuhahaha... but my sisy's review is better. Mine was just something that I sat down and threw together after we watched it (although I didn't post it until the next day). Her's she actually thought about for awhile and then wrote a long, detailed review... Two different styles, I suppose. I'm not good with writing detailed reviews. heh. But thanks!! ^_^

Hmm... I don't think computers are concious, so I don't think it would be making it work. *grins* I'll have to work on that...

Yes, that part was really horrible... And I found myself wondering that, too. It's certainly not something you would know until it happened... You can't exactly pretend that all that is happening.

Oooh, and the scene in the rain is where the best song in the soundtrack is! It's an incredible song... :) I might switch my profile song to it, so then you can hear it. ^_^

    *goes to do so*

  • Okie-dokie, I put it up in my profile. ^_^ It's pretty quiet at the beginning, but the climax is really awesome... So make sure you listen to all of it. And listening to it loud is a must. teehee. :D

  • I will have to check it out. :)

Looking forward to going to The Prestige next Thursday with you guys. I just finished the book last night. I need to ruminate on it for awhile, but I'll be reviewing it soon.

  • You most certainly should. :) And I already have the song picked out that I'm going to put up next week... it's awesome! I'm totally obsessed with it. :D

Indeed! I'm very excited as well... I hope this all comes together smoothly. I got one, possibly two, more RSVPs yesterday, so that's good. Now we're just waiting on the other peoples. Let's hope that day works!!

    Looking forward to that review!!
